LaTrax Servo Replacement

March 21, 2022 by justin 2 Comments

At our last outing to the frozen lake ice track, the stock servo in the LaTrax Prerunner finally gave up the ghost 👻 I figured it was a matter of time as I’ve replaced the included servos in all of our other ready-to-run vehicles: Slash & SCX24. I had a feeling this was inevitable.

I started with this video put together by the fine folks here in town at Dollar Hobbyz:

1/18 scale studded tires

March 7, 2022 by justin 2 Comments

Rather than making a snow track in the back yard this year, I decided to venture out and try some ice racing on a lake. There’s a group called MN R/C rally, rallycross and ice racers on Facebook and they create and maintain an ice track on Pickerel Lake in St. Paul.

Before we would visit the lake I wanted to make some studded tires for my daughter’s 1/18 LaTrax Prerunner.

2WD “Backslash” Wing

September 21, 2020 by justin Leave a Comment

What’s a Backslash, besides this: “\”? It’s a nickname for a RC buggy made from the chassis of a Traxxas Slash. Some people call it a Backslash, some people call it a Sluggy (Slash + Buggy). Whatever you call it, the original 4WD variation is the most popular because it’s extremely simple to mount an 1/8 scale wing to the shock tower and change the body to a 1/8 scale buggy one.

I wanted to do one for my 2WD Slash. There are a couple of extra hurdles on the 2WD, like the gearbox being behind the shock tower, but it still seemed do-able. So here is what I did to mount an 1/8 scale wing to my 2WD Slash.

HobbyMate AIO FVP Camera on a LaTrax Prerunner

September 8, 2020 by justin Leave a Comment

I picked up a HobbyMate HB298T AIO FPV Camera for my Tiny Whoop. It’s discontinued, which is a shame, but you might be able to find them on eBay. I got it because of this very specific feature most micro-FPV cameras don’t have: Built-in Microphone.

BUT… I haven’t installed the addition to my FPV goggles that will allow me to receive and record sound yet. Video however is working nicely and I look forward to adding audio to the mix.

Slash 4×4 Crawler (Part 5) Fenders and Bumpers

February 10, 2020 by justin Leave a Comment

With the Jeep body painted, I just needed to add a couple more details…

Fenders

With the tires slightly wider than the TRX-4 249mm width, I wanted to make sure the Jeep body didn’t look too skinny. I found these rubber fender flares on eBay which were originally designed for a Cherokee XJ body, but would likely fit the JK Rubicon Unlimited just as well.

I left some of the lexan overhang on the fenders purposefully to attach these fenders.

Off-Road Racing in Houston

December 2, 2019 by justin Leave a Comment

Every year my family travels out of the frozen wasteland of Minnesota to Texas, usually around Thanksgiving. If flights are cheap, we’ll fly down. If not, the road-trip is on! I personally like the road trip because it means I can bring some extras along which usually means my bicycle and a couple of RC cars.

Since we’d be driving through Dallas on US-75, we stopped at Traxxas HQ in McKinney.
